Hoppin’ Fresh Bunny Songs!
Hope you’ve been brushing up on your hopping skills! I’ve gathered some of my favorite bunny songs and activities – classics, new ones, and even a Latina coneja. Young children love to hop almost as much as bunnies do, so these activities are always guaranteed to be 24 carrot gold. (And by the way, you know the bunny’s favorite restaurant, don’t you? IHOP, of course!)
I Saw a Little Rabbit
Here’s an oldie but a goodie, a fingerplay sung to the tune of “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star”:
I saw a little rabbit go hop, hop, hop, (Make a V with fingers and make hand hop)
I saw its little ears go flop, flop, flop. (Flop hands by your ears)
I saw its little eyes go blink, blink, blink, (blink)
I saw its little nose go twink, twink, twink, (gently push nose a bit with your pointer finger)
I said, “Little rabbit, won’t you stay?” (fingers in V again, look at “bunny”)
But he looked at me, and he hopped away. (Hop “bunny” behind your back)
5 Little Bunnies by Patty Shukla
(I use clip-art bunnies which I tape to my fingers for this one. For older children, five children can act out the five bunnies.)
Here Is a Bunny
This is a nice easy fingerplay.
Here is a bunny,
(Hold up hand with “V” ears)
With ears so funny,
(Wiggle finger “ears”)
And here is a hole big and round.
(Bend other arm around to make a “hole”)
At the first sound he hears,
(Sway “ears” to the right a bit)
He pricks up his ears,
(Make finger “ears” bounce up a bit)
And jumps in the hole in the ground!
(Make “bunny” jump into the “hole.”)
Lina, la coneja bailarina
This is a cute song to act out with a rabbit puppet. When you know the tune, if you’d like an English version you can sing, try my translation: “My bunny’s name is Lina, and she dances and never stops/ Whenever I sing this song to her she hops and hops and hops!/ Lina, Lina, Lina, my bunny ballerina, / Pretty as can be, She’s my best friend, you see!”
Back to the Farm by Bari Koral
This isn’t a bunny song per se, but there’s a bunny in it, and it’s awesome! Young children love this song!
I Hop Because I’m Happy
I made up this one in case the children didn’t get in enough hopping with the other songs!
Children can hop while singing to the tune of “A-Hunting We Will Go”:
Oh, I hop because I’m happy,
I’m happy so I hop,
I hop because I’m happy and I never want to stop!
(On the word “stop, everyone stop and freeze)
Oh, I sleep because I’m sleepy,
I’m sleepy so I sleep,
I sleep because I’m sleepy
And I sleep and sleep and sleep!
(Everyone pretend to sleep)
Then wake up and sing first verse again.
You might want to discover a pretend carrot nearby. Maybe the children can find carrots too! Then:
Oh, I eat because I’m hungry,
I’m hungry so I eat,
I eat because I’m hungry,
I eat and eat and eat!
(Everyone nibble on pretend carrots)
Then sing the first verse again! After that everyone is usually hopped out!
I like this relaxed, dancy version of the old song. We all dance to it, patting the body parts mentioned (well, we just point to our “tails”) and raise our arms and do jazz hands for “ev’ry little soul must shine.” Nice happy song.
